Student starts initiative to have American flag on Verrazzano to celebrate the United States 250th anniversary
Briefly

Bejleri, at 21, has initiated a project to hoist a large American flag on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Inspired by conversations about past celebrations, particularly the 1976 Bicentennial where a giant flag was displayed, the initiative seeks to bring a historic symbol back to an iconic location. Support from local officials amplifies this endeavor, highlighting its significance to both American heritage and community pride.
I was talking to some old-timers about how they drove to California for the bicentennial, and they mentioned a boat parade and the flag on the Verrazano-Narrows which sparked my interest to look into this story.
During the 1976 Bicentennial celebration of America's founding, a large American flag was displayed across the suspension cables of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge... we are respectfully requesting that the MTA do the same again.
