Ballots for the San Jose District 3 runoff election are nearing distribution as candidates Gabby Chavez-Lopez and Anthony Tordillos prepare for the vote to replace former council member Omar Torres. The campaign has raised concerns over housing, with no multi-family projects initiated last year. Both candidates oppose two policies proposed by Mayor Mahan and stress the need for a task force to address housing issues, citing examples from cities like Austin to argue for better strategies to manage housing and rental prices.
"As a mother and an employer in this district, I think a lot about long-term, about decisions today having impacts on our families," Chavez-Lopez said.
"Cities like Austin just built ten times as much housing as San Jose has. We can see that rents are flattening or declining in Austin while they've continued to rise here," Tordillos said.
