San Jose councilmembers Peter Ortiz and Domingo Candelas admitted their participation in a controversial group text that reportedly contained racial slurs. Activists, including the NAACP, expressed concern over the implications of the texts, which originated from a confiscated phone of former councilmember Omar Torres. The councilmembers, while delivering statements alongside activists, did not plan to release the texts to the public but emphasized their commitment to community engagement and social justice. They met to discuss the implications of their actions and the importance of addressing the harm caused by such conversations.
These conversations were honest, necessary and affirming of their values and commitment to standing with our communities, said Sean Allen, president of NAACP of San Jose/Silicon Valley.
These past couple weeks I have been meeting with several community organizations affected by these alleged messages and I'm working toward a path forward, rooted in understanding and empathy, said Councilmember Domingo Candelas.
