The San Jose Silicon Valley NAACP and Mayor Matt Mahan are demanding the release of text messages allegedly containing racial slurs sent by councilmembers Ortiz and Candelas. Community leaders express concern over the impact of these revelations on public trust, particularly in a diverse region. The text messages were uncovered during an unrelated investigation of former councilmember Omar Torres. Local leaders, including NAACP President Sean Allens, voice their disappointment over the councilmembers' lack of response or apology, stressing the importance of accountability in public service.
"I think the community is shaken up by this one. This is a big one. My phone has not stopped ringing," said NAACP President Sean Allens.
"It's just disheartening that we haven't heard an apology yet. Now, the community is going to question whether or not these people can advocate for us," said Sean Allens.
In a statement, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan demanded transparency - calling for the text messages to be publicly released, stating, 'These are serious allegations.'
