Former Representative George Santos faces over seven years in prison after being convicted of federal crimes including lying to Congress and fraud. Prosecutors argue he shows no genuine remorse, highlighted by his recent combative social media comments against the Justice Department. Santos referred to the DOJ as a "cabal of pedophiles" and claimed victimhood from prosecutorial overreach, undermining his earlier guilty plea. As sentencing approaches, federal prosecutors seek a lengthy prison term, while his defense argues for a minimum sentence of two years.
"Put plainly, Santos is not genuinely remorseful, despite accepting responsibility as part of his allocution," the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York wrote.
"No matter how hard the DOJ comes for me, they are mad because they will NEVER break my spirit," Santos tweeted.
"Lawless Merrick Garland holdovers are vicious and have 0 regards for the law or Court orders!" Santos tweeted, emphasizing his defiance against the DOJ.
Despite tearfully pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, Santos claimed he was a victim of prosecutorial overreach.
