A public hearing on New York City's tax lien sale faced disruption from protesters urging the city to halt the sale of unpaid debts to private investors, which they say leads to foreclosures. The Abolish the New York City Tax Lien Sale Coalition criticized the city's Tax Lien Sale Task Force for not exploring alternative solutions, despite Local Law 82 mandating such considerations. Activist Albert Scott emphasized the economic harm this system inflicts on Black and Latino communities, highlighting the urgency for change as a new lien sale is set to occur on June 3.
The tax lien sale has been paused since 2021, but a new sale is taking place on Tuesday, June 3. The system allows the city to sell off unpaid city property debts to a trust backed by private investors.
Our Black, Latino, working class community of homeowners and tenants are being economically brutalized by this lien sale, said Albert Scott, a lifelong East New York resident.
