Opinion: Next on the Abundance Agenda? Abundant Labor.
"Underappreciated in New York's abundance story is a key constituency whose partnership will be essential to building a flourishing future: trade unions. When the forces of "no" are adversarial to change, it's our unions that organize to demand we get shovels in the ground. And when abundance boogeymen choke our progress, it's union jobs that languish."
Working families and marginalized communities face pressures from a status quo that benefits the super-rich. Abundance centers on solving problems through delivery rather than only passing laws or writing checks. Over decades, the left developed habits of blocking highways, razing neighborhoods, and burning fossil fuels, along with legal and review processes that slow progress. The result is a lack of muscle memory to say yes to building homes, improving public transit, and siting renewable energy. Democratic governance depends on showing blue cities and states can deliver by expanding housing, transit, renewable power, and public sector capacity. Trade unions are positioned as an essential partner, organizing to secure construction and sustaining union jobs when abundance faces opposition.
