A jury awarded $6.45 million to a woman named Castillo, who suffered severe injuries after slipping on fish guts outside Citarella over a decade ago. The incident occurred during Labor Day weekend in 2014, leading to 12 surgeries. Initially reluctant to pursue legal action, Castillo sought compensation only after being denied an accident report by the store. Her attorney emphasized that the verdict underscored the grocery store's responsibility to ensure pedestrian safety, especially in areas they occupy.
"This Manhattan jury listened to all the evidence, and they spoke through their verdict that it is not OK for a grocery store to take over a sidewalk for their business and profits and not protect pedestrians in doing so," attorney Sharon Scanlan of Jacoby & Meyers, who represented Castillo, told the Post.
Castillo, an avid salsa dancer before the accident, has not been able to dance in the years since due to ongoing complications resulting from her injury.
