Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer Amato has introduced two significant bills aimed at addressing the critical police staffing shortage in New York City. Bill A.5376 offers financial incentives for long-serving officers, while Bill A.3968 seeks to restore the 20-year retirement option for all NYPD members. These changes aim to rectify staffing disparities and improve retention, allowing for a more equitable retirement process. The bills reflect a broader strategy to enhance support for the NYPD amid a staffing crisis that has left the department with nearly 7,000 fewer officers than its peak capacity.
The staffing crisis within the NYPD is real. Last year, we passed my legislation and implemented 'Phase 1,' which ensured a salary enhancement for our longest-serving police officers.
These legislative changes aim to offer more equitable retirement options for all officers and provide incentives to retain seasoned personnel as the city faces a significant police shortage.
