Andy Byford, former New York City Transit President, has joined Amtrak's Board of Directors, tasked with overseeing the overhaul of Penn Station. This $7 billion project, backed by a public-private partnership, aims to modernize the aging transit hub, improving infrastructure and rail capacity. Byford's leadership is expected to focus on cost control and timely completion of the project, reflecting the enthusiasm expressed by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Previously, Byford led NYC subways to improved on-time performance, but left amidst conflicts with former Governor Cuomo.
Byford resigned from his Big Apple role in February 2020 after butting heads with then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, now the favorite to become the city's next mayor.
Duffy stated, 'Andy shares our dedication to keeping costs down and completing this project on time. Together we'll work to deliver a brand-new Penn Station that is safe, clean, and worthy of the American people.'
