City Hall has begun dismantling the controversial 3,000 bed migrant shelter on Randall's Island, marking a shift in the city's response to the migrant crisis that once overwhelmed its resources.
According to Mayor Adams, the city is no longer scrambling to open new shelters as evidenced by the closure of existing facilities, reflecting a significant shift in how the city is managing the influx of migrants.
Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom noted that after 14 weeks of reduced new asylum arrivals, the city is now able to move away from its reliance on large humanitarian relief centers.
Mayor Adams emphasized the city's ability to focus on cost savings rather than emergency spending, noting a major turnaround in the legal and operational stance toward the migrant situation.
