As of now, New York City taxpayers have allocated $306 million more to migrant spending since July 1, totaling nearly $5.5 billion for the ongoing immigration crisis.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli emphasized the strain on the city’s finances, stating the city bears the majority of the costs associated with assisting asylum seekers.
DiNapoli noted that strong tax revenues from business and tourism post-pandemic have been crucial in managing the financial burden of the migrant crisis.
City Hall projects that 69% of migrant care costs will be absorbed by the city, with the state covering 30% and the federal government only contributing 1%.
