New York City's subway crime has significantly decreased, with major offenses dropping 18%, marking the second-lowest levels in 27 years. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch highlighted no murders in the subway this quarter, the first occurrence since 2018. This change follows the deployment of additional police officers to enhance safety amid fears of violence. Passengers, including locals and tourists, report feeling safer on the subway, indicating a positive response to increased police presence and a commendable transit safety plan introduced earlier in the year.
When we announced this plan alongside the mayor back in January, we promised real results, and boy did we get them.
The subway feels a lot safer; there's not as much abuse or people disturbing you.
There have been zero murders in our subways this quarter, the first time that that has happened since 2018.
Laci Komula, a visitor, expressed that despite hearing horror stories, her experience has been pleasantly surprising with the subway safety improvements.
