NYC Section 8 housing voucher waitlist reopens for first time in 15 years but acceptance depends on a lottery | amNewYork
Briefly

For the first time in 15 years, City Hall temporarily reopened the Section 8 waitlist, allowing low-income families to apply for federal housing vouchers to rent private apartments.
NYCHA is accepting new applications after 12 years. The city plans to accept 200,000 new applicants through a lottery to add to its waitlist.
Competition for the 200,000 spots is high with over 150,000 families applying in the first day. Section 8 targets very low-income families and public housing residents.
Eligibility criteria for Section 8 includes being at least 18 years old, having a US citizen or qualifying noncitizen member, and earning 50% or less than the Area Median Income.
