Mayor Eric Adams strongly criticized former Governor Andrew Cuomo's reputation as a 'great manager' regarding his handling of nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adams contended that Cuomo's directive to admit COVID-19 patients in nursing homes led to approximately 15,000 premature deaths. Joined by grieving families and various 2025 mayoral candidates, Adams emphasized the racial disparities in the pandemic response, including vaccine distribution. Cuomo's office dismissed Adams' critiques, accusing him of being desperate and politicizing the tragedy, all while continuing to defend his record despite the mounting controversies.
During the pandemic, many black and brown lawmakers - including City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams - argued there were disparities in the locations of vaccine and testing sites across the city.
The mayor's criticism came a day after relatives of nursing home residents who died during the pandemic excoriated Cuomo for his disastrous directive telling the facilities to take in COVID-19 patients.
Adams argued there was a 'racial disparity' in how Cuomo handled the pandemic, from the distribution of personal protective equipment to the distribution of vaccines.
He incorrectly handled the nursing home issues. Some people say, 'He's a great manager. Well, he darn sure managed that crisis well,' Adams said sarcastically.
