NYC, LI live poultry markets shut down after local cases of bird flu discovered
Briefly

Following the discovery of seven bird flu cases in New York City, Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered a temporary shutdown of all live poultry markets in NYC, Long Island, and Westchester County. The state is taking this precautionary measure to depopulate infected flocks and prevent further transmission. Although officials stress that there is no immediate human health threat, the shutdown will last until February 14, during which markets must sell existing poultry inventory and undergo cleaning. The current avian influenza strain poses minimal risk to humans, with only 67 cases reported nationally since 2022.
The temporary market shutdown is part of a strategy to curb the spread of bird flu while ensuring public safety, with no current human cases.
Measures are being taken to de-populate infected flocks, clean markets, and prevent future transmission of avian influenza to protect New Yorkers.
