State Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal is considering legislation to prohibit naming public buildings after convicted felons, spurred by discussions over renaming Penn Station to 'Trump Station.' This idea surfaced after Gov. Kathy Hochul expressed openness to the name change as part of negotiations over a major renovation project. Hoylman-Sigal argues that public officials must be held to high standards, reflecting values through facility names. Trump, now a felon, was previously convicted of falsifying business records. Hochul is more focused on the project's funding rather than its name, aiming to save $1.3 billion.
I don't think public officials who are convicted of a felony should have any state or municipal building named after them. We must hold our government officials to the highest standard and the names of our public facilities should reflect those values.
It would not be my favorite thing to call it, but it'll save us $1.3 billion that I'm not planning to spend.
