The National Transportation Safety Board's investigation into a deadly cargo ship fire in Newark revealed significant failings in the fire department's training and preparedness for marine firefighting. The blaze on the Grande Costa D'Avorio, which lasted nearly a week, claimed two firefighters' lives. Criticism was levied at the department's leadership for exposing first responders to unnecessary risks and lacking essential plans and training, highlighting the crucial need for better preparation in handling such incidents.
âYou have to be properly trained when you respond to a marine vessel fire,â he said. âIn this particular instance, if they had been, they should never have went inside.â
âI hope that Newark fire department leadership is listening. This isnât just a failure of communication. This was a failure of leadership. Thatâs what this was,â NTSB chairperson Jennifer Homendy said.
