NJ politicians who stormed ICE center wanted '15 minutes of fame,' DHS says, as more charges could be coming
Briefly

A group of New Jersey politicians, including Reps. Menendez, McIver, Coleman, and Newark Mayor Baraka, stormed the Delaney Hall Detention Center in protest. Their actions drew sharp criticism from Homeland Security, with spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin indicating that such conduct puts safety at risk. Baraka faced trespassing charges for refusing to leave, while Menendez and McIver's potential charges remain under investigation. Protests call for shutting the facility down, although politicians blame ICE agents for escalating tensions during the encounter, which was captured on video.
McLaughlin emphasized the issue, stating, 'We know that the [Newark mayor], we know these members of Congress want their 15 minutes of fame so desperately, but they’re willing to do it at the peril of the safety of our great law enforcement and even the detainees as well.'
McLaughlin remarked, 'These members of Congress, this mayor and these protesters are not above the law,' reiterating the seriousness of the actions taken at the detention center.
