A manhole fire on Van Brunt Street in Red Hook led to power outages for almost 40 businesses, with emergency services responding shortly after 11:30 a.m. The FDNY battled the blaze for nearly 30 minutes amidst rising temperatures, prompting local business owners to seek alternative power sources. Concerns about perishable goods were raised, particularly by MCH Halah Meat Packing, highlighting the urgent impact on local businesses. Con Edison is working to restore power amidst these challenging conditions.
"There was a lot of smoke, and the firemen tried to put it out," says Gianmarco, a local business owner. "There is a little bit of power but not much - you cannot use the air conditioner."
"It's very bad, we have no power we have a lot of meat and stuff so we don't know what to do," said Ali, owner of MCH Halah Meat Packing.
