Mayor Eric Adams has urged state lawmakers for an additional $1.1 billion to support the city's migrant crisis efforts, following a lack of funding in Gov. Kathy Hochul's recent budget proposal. Over the past three years, the city has spent nearly $7 billion assisting over 200,000 migrants and anticipates further expenditures. Adams emphasized the urgent need to address a projected budget shortfall, as the mayor's budget assumed state aid based on past allocations. With no resources allocated in Hochul's plan for asylum seekers, the city faces financial limitations ahead.
Adams said, 'While we appreciate the contribution the state has made, we know we have a gap of $1.1 billion budget shortfall from this program within 12 weeks we must fill.'
Jacques Jiha noted, 'We budgeted for about a billion [dollars] of state aid that we would be receiving, but currently, the [state] budget doesn't have any resources at all for asylum seekers.'
