Hochul's $252B state budget offers cash for unions - but cuts for autistic kids
Briefly

In a recent budget proposal, New York Governor Kathy Hochul proposed significant cuts to Medicaid spending, notably targeting funding for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy crucial for children with autism. This therapy helps manage behaviors often associated with autism, improving daily life and academic skills. While some families have private insurance to cover the costs, low-income families heavily depend on Medicaid, which only expanded ABA coverage in recent years. The proposed cuts are alarming for many parents, who fear losing crucial support for their children’s development.
Fortunately for many families, including ours, private insurance covers the cost of ABA therapy. But for needy families who rely on public health-care programs, partial Medicaid coverage for ABA only began in 2021.
