Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the number of National Guard troops in NYC subways will increase from 750 to 1,000 this holiday season, enhancing safety and security for commuters.
Governor Hochul reiterated that the added guards are not a reaction to rising crime rates, but to provide a greater sense of security for riders in the subway system.
MTA officials reported they have completed the installation of thousands of surveillance cameras in subway cars and stations, aimed at boosting real-time crime detection and overall transit safety.
Although the reported crime in NYC subways has decreased by 10% since March, it's uncertain whether this is directly linked to the National Guard deployment or other law enforcement efforts.
