Bryan Calvo, Hialeah's youngest councilman, has announced his candidacy for mayor following the resignation of Mayor Esteban Bovo. At just 27, Calvo has a strong educational background with degrees from Harvard and Florida International University. Despite losing in the Miami-Dade tax collector's primary, he garnered significant support in Hialeah. Calvo has positioned himself as a candidate for change, criticizing longstanding politicians and focusing on residents' interests amid a turbulent relationship with Bovo characterized by legal disputes and public disagreements over key city issues.
In November, voters in Hialeah and across the United States spoke clearly: we do not want recycled politicians, we want change. Some people have been in office longer than I've been alive, making the same broken promises.
My actions show that I will always fight for residents, and I'll continue to work for their best interests.
Calvo and Bovo, who were elected in the same cycle in 2021 as councilman and mayor respectively, soon found themselves at odds over a series of contentious issues.
At one point Calvo filed a lawsuit against Bovo, accusing him of systematically abusing his power, highlighting a significant rift in their political relationship.
