The Federal Courthouse in Downtown Brooklyn was evacuated for several hours due to a suspicious package containing an unidentified white powder. Emergency services, including FDNY, NYPD, and HAZMAT, responded promptly after police received reports around 10:35 a.m. Courthouse staff were ordered to evacuate immediately, halting all activities. One individual was evaluated for possible exposure. While the courthouse resumed operations after 1:30 p.m., emergency units remained on site in case of further developments. Amidst increasing threats against judges, concerns linger whether the substance is hazardous or merely a hoax.
"It was some sort of material, I think they are trying to figure it out. They themselves don't know," Dr. Burchell M. Marcus, director of Community Advocate Development Organization said, as he waited outside.
"They just told everyone to stop what they are doing and leave, so everything stopped," Dr. Marcus detailed about the evacuation situation.
The entire stretch of Cadman Plaza East was blocked by response vehicles and barriers, highlighting the serious nature of the response to the suspicious package.
Whether the powder turns out to be truly hazardous or just a hoax, threats and intimidation against judges have been increasing, straining the integrity of the legal system.
