During a New York City Council hearing, immigrants, including one named Christian, shared harrowing experiences of being scammed by individuals falsely presenting themselves as immigration attorneys. Christian recounted being overwhelmed with the need for legal assistance in his asylum process, leading to him being misled by a fraudster who charged fees, forged documents, and orchestrated a deceptive virtual court hearing. Other immigrants also testified about similar fraudulent schemes, emphasizing the urgent need for increased protection and awareness regarding immigration services fraud impacting vulnerable communities.
Christian recounted his ordeal, detailing how fraudsters posed as immigration lawyers, charging victims while creating fake hearings, which exploited the vulnerable status of migrants.
'On the day of the virtual hearing, a fake judge appeared, wearing a black robe. Fortunately, a law student accompanied me during this ordeal,' said Christian.
