Exclusive | Red alert: Brooklyn pol says he and other USSR immigrants are more 'cultured' than Americans
"We, the descendants of the USSR, consider ourselves a little more cultured than the residents of the country we came to. We go to theaters and classical music concerts. We take care of the humanitarian education of our children, but at the same time, we remove the traffic lights from the bridge."
"When common sense left the building, Novakhov held the door. And just when you think it can't get worse, he demeans and degrades his own constituents as inferior and uncultured if they're not from the former USSR. It's a disgrace to the office he holds."
State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov, a former Democrat turned Republican representing southern Brooklyn, sparked controversy with a February 18 Facebook post responding to vandalism of taxpayer-funded lights on a walking bridge. In the post, he stated that USSR-born descendants consider themselves more cultured than American residents, citing attendance at theaters and classical concerts while criticizing the area's lack of household culture. Novakhov later denied the remarks, claiming Facebook's translation from Russian was inaccurate. His political opponent, moderate Democrat Joey Cohen-Saben, criticized the comments as demeaning to constituents and called them a disgrace to public office.
