New York City has agreed to pay $3.5 million to settle a lawsuit following the tragic death of Belgian firefighter Johnny Beernaert during an FDNY fireboat crash in June 2022. The incident occurred during an unauthorized cruise when Beernaert and his wife were aboard the fireboat, which collided with a private fishing boat. A Coast Guard report criticized the reckless operation and unsafe speed of the fireboat, leading to this settlement with Beernaert's family while the city did not admit any fault. The family hopes to move on from the tragedy.
