Exclusive | NYC pol accused of blocking critics from posting on her social media and dares naysayer to take her to court: 'Not democratic'
Briefly

Brooklyn Assembly member Emily Gallagher is reportedly limiting public discourse on her social media by deleting critical comments and blocking users who disagree with her. This action has sparked concerns regarding potential First Amendment violations, as public officials are expected to uphold free speech. Critics, including Shannon Phipps from the Berry Street Alliance, argue that Gallagher's conduct resembles tactics used in authoritarian regimes. Phipps, who has been blocked since 2024 after criticizing Gallagher-supported policies, highlights that citizens face repercussions for reasonable political critique, not just derogatory comments.
"The parallels between the way that she operates and the way theocracy operates or how fascism starts, it's right on the money," Shannon Phipps, founder of the Berry Street Alliance.
"People are being blocked for having a political critique of her, or if you're posting something about a political issue that you want her to pay attention to. It's that stuff. It's not, 'Emily, you're fat and ugly.' It’s the real stuff," Phipps said.
