Complaints regarding misconduct among city Department of Education employees have surged, yet the Special Commissioner of Investigation only investigates a small fraction of these cases. In 2024, nearly 12,000 complaints were received, but only 484 probes were initiated. Despite calls from officials for more funding and accountability, many accused staff remain protected in what some call 'rubber rooms,' receiving salaries without facing consequences. This has raised concerns about systemic issues within the agency that discourage accountability and foster corruption.
We certainly need more funding for investigations, but I don't know if the administration has the resolve for it. They really don't.
The system actually encourages corruption, because if you're caught, nothing happens.
