Rep. Elise Stefanik publicly refuted Speaker Mike Johnson's claim of discussions regarding a potential New York gubernatorial campaign, asserting there have been no conversations on this topic. Speaker Johnson had indicated that he had spoken with both Rep. Stefanik and Rep. Mike Lawler about their ambitions for the governor's position. Meanwhile, reports suggest Stefanik is seriously considering a run due to encouragement from GOP donors and allies, despite Governor Kathy Hochul's bid for reelection and criticisms directed at congressional Republicans by Hochul's office over budget resolutions.
"This is not true. I have had no conversations with the Speaker regarding the Governor's race," Rep. Stefanik wrote.
"Are we having conversations? We are, yeah. And, that's all I'm gonna say about it," he said.
"Trump and his allies in Congress are hellbent on standing in the way of a better, more affordable New York - these sky-high prices and dangerous cuts are on their hands," the governor said in a statement.
Rep. Stefanik defended the resolution as an advancement on President Donald Trump's 'legislative mandate' to enact an 'America First agenda.'
