DOT Stalls Brooklyn's Third Ave. Bike Lanes After Biz Pushback - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

Sunset Park's anticipated protected bike lane on Third Avenue faces delays, pushed back to at least 2026 due to opposition from local business groups. The Department of Transportation (DOT) cited a need for additional outreach before making any safety improvements, a strategy criticized by community leaders who express distrust in DOT's commitment. Originally scheduled for changes by 2024, the DOT's postponement echoes previous instances where safety projects faced similar fates under Mayor Adams' administration. Community Board officials are frustrated and concerned about ongoing road safety in the area.
We should not expect to hear from them [DOT] in 2025 and there will be no action, no safety measures added to Third Avenue in 2025.
They say that they need to do additional outreach in the community for residents and businesses and other parties, and say they will get back to us in 2026. Don't know if I believe that.
The agency’s backtrack has been likened to Mayor Adams wavering on other street safety projects like the notorious McGuinness Boulevard saga in Greenpoint.
DOT officials previously said they could implement the changes by the summer or fall of 2024, but after pushback by some local businesses, the plans were postponed.
