Disaster narrowly avoided at airport as air traffic control goes dark
Briefly

Newark Airport faced a radar blackout due to a telecommunications issue at the Philadelphia TRACON control center, causing 90 seconds of darkness at a time of light traffic. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the incident, which contributed to significant cancellations and delays, totaling 125 cancellations and 292 delays by noon. This blackout follows a previous incident just weeks earlier, prompting air traffic controllers to warn passengers against flying into Newark due to safety concerns. The airport's operational reliability is increasingly scrutinized as it serves a significant volume of travelers.
During the blackout Friday, air traffic controllers were reportedly overheard telling a FedEx cargo plane their radar screens were offline.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a statement on X Friday, revealing the blackout was caused by a telecommunication outage at Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control.
It's not a safe situation for the flying public!' an unnamed air traffic controller at Newark Airport warned shortly after the previous blackout.
Newark is the second-busiest airport in the New York-New Jersey area, catering to nearly 49 million travelers in 2024.
