Dem Rep. LaMonica McIver charged over chaotic Newark ICE detention center protest, Mayor Ras Baraka's dismissed, US Attorney Alina Habba announces
Briefly

Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) is facing criminal charges for assaulting and interfering with law enforcement during a protest at the Delaney Hall Detention Center. The charges were announced by acting US Attorney Alina Habba, who indicated her office afforded McIver multiple opportunities to resolve the situation without legal repercussions, which she ultimately declined. Habba emphasized that no individual, including politicians, is above the law, asserting the impartial duty of the justice system to address such acts.
Today my office has charged Congresswoman McIver with violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 111(a)(1) for assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement.
I have persistently made efforts to address these issues without bringing criminal charges and have given Representative McIver every opportunity to come to a resolution, but she unfortunately declined.
No one is above the law - politicians or otherwise. It is the job of this office to uphold justice impartially, regardless of who you are.
Now we will let the justice system work.
