Albany Democrats have dismissed Governor Kathy Hochul's proposal to expand involuntary commitment laws amidst concerns over NYC's mental health crisis. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie emphasized support for helping individuals with mental health issues, yet Assembly and Senate counterproposals lacked the key aspect of involuntary commitments. Instead, they focus on improving hospital discharge planning and ensuring safety on public transport. Mental health advocates reflect a mix of hope and caution regarding potential compromises, promoting solutions that avoid forced treatment while enhancing community safety and support for individuals in need.
We want people to feel safe on the subways. Subways should not become temporary living places for people who have mental health issues.
You can improve people's lives and keep everybody safer without having to go to more forced treatment.
We've always been supportive of that... We want to come to some recognition that people who need help, get the help that they need.
There needs to be a compromise between doing something for public safety while also ensuring proper mental health support for individuals.
