NYC Mayor expressed confidence in the success of these detectors after thorough testing by the NYPD with company Evolv's technology. Legal Aid attorney criticized the initiative for privacy invasion and potential risks to people of color.
MTA Chair sees the detectors as a positive step to address subway crime, while data indicates a decrease in subway crime below pre-pandemic levels. Facial recognition is explicitly stated not to be part of these detectors.
Other safety measures, including subway platform doors, are also being introduced to ensure enhanced safety in the NYC subway system.
