With political turmoil surrounding Mayor Eric Adams, Democratic leaders are encouraging City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams to enter the mayoral race. She has filed paperwork for a campaign committee and plans to decide post-State of the City address. Despite challenges including fundraising and the historical failure of prior City Council speakers, her allies view her as a potential candidate who may unify a diverse coalition against competitors, such as former Governor Cuomo, while addressing ethical issues in the current administration.
Ms. Adams, the first Black woman to lead the Council, has not made up her mind.

She is seen by her allies as an antidote to the ethical, legal and management issues facing Mr. Adams.
New York City has yet to have a female mayor.
