8 people died in gun-related shootings in the first 4 months of the year, statistics for 3 of LI's biggest police departments show
Briefly

In the first four months of 2025, Long Island's three largest police departments reported eight firearm-related homicides, a substantial rise from one during the same period in 2024. Six of these homicides were recorded by Suffolk County police, with half involving murder-suicides. While statewide data indicated an overall decline in shooting incidents and gun violence victims, Long Island's departments did not mirror this trend, showing a troubling increase in firearm fatalities. Governor Kathy Hochul reaffirmed the commitment to reducing gun violence through support initiatives in affected communities.
Six of the eight Long Island homicides were investigated by Suffolk County police, although department officials said half were victims of murder-suicides.
My administration has been laser focused on eliminating gun violence and reducing the number of gun-related injuries and fatalities across the state," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.
The 28 departments involved in GIVE collectively report about 90% of violent crimes involving firearms outside of New York City, according to DCJS officials.
Although there was a 14% drop in shooting incidents statewide, Long Island's police departments did not follow this trend, marking an increase in firearm homicides.
