Samantha Randazzo, 33, was nine months pregnant when she went into labor during her arraignment in a Brooklyn courtroom on Friday, May 15. She had been arrested the previous day for alleged drug possession and trespassing, after police said she was on the roof of her building without authorization. A joint press release from The Legal Aid Society and multiple public defender organizations stated that attorneys and staff present in the courtroom witnessed her labor and delivery on a courtroom bench without adequate medical care, privacy, or dignity, surrounded by court personnel, prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and others. The release also claimed she delivered “in shackles” after reportedly spending more than 24 hours in custody.
