With 'Mad Bills to Pay,' a Bronx filmmaker debuts with a powerful portrait of young love in the borough
"Rico and Destiny are in kind of a dysfunctional relationship. After they hook up and Destiny gets pregnant, she's kicked out of her apartment by her mom."
"My mom became pregnant with my brother when she was 16. I was just thinking back on the challenges that they must have faced and how difficult that must have been."
'Mad Bills to Pay' follows 19-year-old Rico, who sells nutcrackers to support his pregnant girlfriend, Destiny, 16. Their relationship becomes chaotic after her mother kicks her out. The film, set in the Bronx, highlights the struggles of young love and parenthood. Written and directed by Joel Alfonzo Vargas, inspired by his own parents' teenage parenting experiences, the film won the NEXT Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast at Sundance and opens in New York City on April 17.
