Ph.D. students at the University of Rochester have been striving for unionization for over a year, especially in light of a broader movement among graduate workers. Initial discussions with university officials indicated an openness to facilitate a private election to determine union representation. While progress was being made, including agreement on voter eligibility, the situation shifted after the re-election of Donald Trump, raising concerns over the National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) direction. Following a February meeting, the university expressed a preference for an election under NLRB rather than a private vote, amidst fears that a conservative board might restrict grad worker unionization.
If Trump eventually does appoint a conservative majority to the board, some union supporters worry it might rule that grad workers can't unionize through the NLRB.
Honestly, things were going surprisingly well... We kind of anticipated maybe a harder fight than we received up until December.
