Due to a significant bird flu outbreak, egg prices in the U.S. have drastically risen, averaging $7.34 per dozen. In response, various grocery stores are limiting sales, and restaurants are imposing surcharges on egg-based dishes. Bodegas, such as Pamela's Green Deli in the Bronx, are offering 'loosies'—individual eggs sold cheaply. The deli's owner aims to help the community adapt to rising costs, despite potential legal risks concerning local sales regulations mandated by New York state law.
"If they're spending $12 on a dozen eggs, how are they going to afford the other stuff, like bread, milk, butter?" said Fernando Rodriguez, the store's owner, to CBS.
"We're doing it for the community, not for the summonses they might send us," Rodriguez told the outlet.
The USDA has stated, 'For now, shell egg availability remains limited and inconsistent in many retail markets.'
