"The proposed rules would block all federal funding through Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for any hospital that provides gender-affirming care to patients under the age of 18. The change would amount to a nationwide ban on gender-affirming care for minors at hospitals that rely on federal Medicare and Medicaid funding."
"Larissa Godfrey-Smith, a D.C.-based therapist who works with trans kids and their families as well as trans adults, told that she and her husband had considered the risk of her getting arrested and decided that participating in the protest was worth it. Godfrey-Smith told the outlet they've seen firsthand the toll the Trump administration's anti-trans agenda is having on her clients."
The Trump administration proposed rules blocking federal Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP funding to hospitals providing gender-affirming care for patients under 18, effectively creating a nationwide ban. On February 17, over 50 activists, including parents and grandparents of transgender youth, protested outside the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services headquarters. Twenty-five demonstrators, including three mothers, were arrested by Department of Homeland Security agents and transferred to D.C. Metropolitan Police. Larissa Godfrey-Smith, a therapist working with transgender children and families, participated despite arrest risks, citing anger over misinformation and witnessing the toll of anti-trans policies on her clients.
