To reduce fraudulent claims, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is implementing stringent identity-proofing measures. Beginning March 31, individuals in New York will no longer have the option to verify their identity over the phone. Instead, anyone unable to confirm their identity through the 'My Social Security' online service must visit a physical SSA office. This initiative aims to enhance security and protect social security benefits from fraudulent activities, thereby shifting the verification process towards in-person interactions.
In a bid to curb fraudulent claims, the SSA will require millions of beneficiaries and applicants, starting March 31, to verify their identities in person.
The new rules will eliminate phone verifications for New Yorkers, directing those who can't use 'My Social Security' online service to visit physical locations.
