Psychiatric care in NSW facing collapse' because of poor pay and conditions, court hears as arbitration battle begins
Briefly

The NSW junior doctor psychiatry training system is at risk of collapse amidst severe pay and work condition issues, as reported in the Industrial Relations Commission court. Comparatively, junior doctors are significantly more inclined to pursue psychiatry in Victoria. Low uptake of psychiatric training in NSW is attributed to overworked staff and underpayment, with pay increase demands due to staff resignations and threats to public health. This instability raises alarms over accreditation of hospitals for training junior doctors.
Thomas Dixon, representing the Australian Salaried Medical Officers' Federation, stated: "Junior doctors are not coming through... because of the dysfunction that’s become manifest, about overwork and being relatively underpaid."
Dr. Pramudie Gunaratne mentioned, "The college is undertaking emergency accreditation visits to ensure supervision requirements are being met... the state is struggling to manage its trainees due to a shortage of full time staff specialist supervisor."
