Prince Frederik of Luxembourg passed away at the age of 22 from POLG Mitochondrial disease, a rare genetic condition. His father, Prince Robert, announced his death with a poignant tribute on the POLG Foundation website, recalling Frederik's bravery as he bid farewell to the family during his last moments. Despite his illness, Frederik maintained a sense of humor, which was evident in the family's final interactions. Established by Frederik, the POLG Foundation aims to seek community support, treatment options, and a cure for the disease he faced since he was 14, marking his legacy as one of courage and compassion.
It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son. This statement highlights the profound loss felt by Prince Robert and Princess Julie as they announce the death of their son Prince Frederik, who succumbed to POLG Mitochondrial disease at 22.
Frederik called us in to his room to speak to him for one last time on Feb. 28. His bravery allowed him to say goodbye to his family, embodying courage even in his final moments.
Frederik's last question to me was: 'Papa, are you proud of me?' The clarity of this question in his weakened state significantly marked the moment, as he needed reassurance on his contributions to the family and the world.
I called my son our 'Superhero', emphasizing the legacy he leaves behind with the POLG Foundation aiming for treatment options and a cure, showing his resolve to make a difference despite his challenges.
