Artist Molly Gochman presented a new installation from her "Monuments to Motherhood" series, a 15-foot bronze sculpture located at Prospect Park's north entrance. The unveiling included statements from Gochman, Prospect Park Alliance President Morgan Monaco, and NYC Parks Senior Public Art Coordinator Elizabeth Masella. Gochman's sculpture, featuring intertwining bronze arms, symbolizes mutual support among caregivers and aims to invoke feelings of embrace. The use of bronze reflects transformative caregiving. It deviates from traditional monuments by honoring the everyday acts of love that often go unnoticed, emphasizing that everyone participates in acts of care.
"The two loops are supporting one another and they can't stand alone," Gochman said, gesturing to the sculpture's winding bronze arms that wrap around each other and rest on the grass. "I hope when people enter Prospect Park, they feel embraced [and] feel a hug because that's the intention I put into it."
"It's a reminder of how when we care for something, we're transforming it in ways we can't completely predict," Gochman said.
Monaco said that the monument memorialized the everyday person. "'Monuments to Motherhood' is very much trying to upend the traditional monument and celebrate the everyday person and the everyday acts of love that often go unnoticed."
Gochman added, "This is a monument to all of us, because all of us perform care in some way. We are breathing monuments to others who cared for us."
