Roosevelt High School in Long Island hosted a First Responder Career Day featuring a police helicopter landing, drawing students to explore various law enforcement careers. The event included interactions with K-9 units, mounted officers, and showcases of criminal justice tools like fingerprint kits and forensic nursing gear. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman emphasized the importance of bridging gaps between youth and law enforcement, enabling students to view police in a more positive light. Students expressed newfound interest in fields like forensic nursing and appreciated the sense of community safety they experienced during the event.
A Nassau County police helicopter theatrically touched down on Roosevelt High School's field as students crowded the landing zone - eagerly capturing the memorable moment on their phones.
It was a great opportunity for students to see what law enforcement and first responders do for a living and see ... it as an option for a career.
The goal was two-fold: To show kids there's a bright future in public safety, and to help bridge the gap between young people and law enforcement.
It was really nice to get together as a community of students and see that there is safety in the community we live in.
