The article discusses rising concerns among parents regarding the necessity of hip dysplasia surgeries in their children following an audit showing many might be unnecessary. Approximately 200 worried parents reached out to a HSE helpline to express their concerns. The audit, initiated by a British surgeon, examined surgeries conducted over a span from 2021 to 2023 across multiple hospitals. Furthermore, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill plans to review the audit findings and establish an expert panel, heightening ongoing calls for more robust operational oversight and inquiries into Children's Health Ireland.
Around 200 calls were received by the helpline over the weekend after the audit report by a British surgeon highlighted concern about the high level of potentially unnecessary hip dysplasia surgeries in Temple Street Hospital and Cappagh Hospital.
Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said she will bring the terms of reference for the establishment of an expert panel to review the cases in the report to the Cabinet next week.
The advocacy groups are still unclear if the parents whose children were part of the audit have been contacted and those whose surgery may not have been necessary have been notified.
Labour spokeswoman on health, Marie Sherlock said, "it's crucial that there will now be enhanced operational oversight of CHI by the HSE...The minister must compel CHI to stop the appalling drip-feed of revelations..."
