Parents demand city pull plug on EV charging station across from Brooklyn school
Briefly

Parents in Brooklyn are protesting a proposed electric vehicle charging station by EVgo, set to replace a former KFC near an elementary school. They express concerns over safety, worrying that increased traffic, potential fires, and radiation exposure could harm their children. This pushback coincides with new zoning laws simplifying construction for such facilities without local community board input. Activist John Ricottone emphasizes the need for safety evaluations and argues that the station's location, known for traffic accidents, endangers students and the community.
Placing EV stations in such a high-traffic, accident-prone area-directly adjacent to an elementary school-is both reckless and dangerous. The safety of our children and the wellbeing of our community must take precedence over infrastructure that can-and should-be located in a safer, more appropriate location.
This is not something that should be built across from a school with over 1,000 children. Parents worry the station would bring more traffic, expose kids to potential radiation, and increase the risk of fires.
Plans for an EVgo charging station on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 92nd Street in Bay Ridge are cruising along thanks to new City of Yes zoning updates that make it easier to build green energy technology and bypass community board input.
Parents insist possible health risks aren't worth the purported green benefits of the new electric vehicle charging station set to be built across from an elementary school.
